Dental Care

As pet owners, we often focus on providing our furry companions with the best nutrition, exercise, and grooming routines. However, one of the most common but also frequently overlooked health problems for companion animals is dental disease. Studies show that 50% of all dogs and cats have some form of periodontal disease. That number jumps to 80% in pets that are 3 years of age or older.

If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause infection, pain, and tooth loss over time. It can also lead to serious health problems like microscopic changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Because of this, we recommend an annual veterinary dental healthcare examination for all pets.

Pets Need Dental Care Too!

Like with humans, many of your pet’s health problems start in the mouth. Plaque, tartar, periodontal disease, and infected teeth serve as a source of inflammation and infection for the rest of the body.

Signs your pet might have a dental issue include:

  • Drooling, chewing oddly, or dropping food from the mouth
  • Reduced appetite or behavior changes
  • Facial swelling
  • Bad breath
  • Loose, broken, or discolored teeth
  • Bloody saliva
  • Pawing or rubbing at their mouth

We recommend annual dental exams for all pets and professional dental procedures as your veterinarian recommends. Regular brushing with pet-friendly toothpaste, providing dental chews and toys, and incorporating dental diets into your pet’s nutrition plan can help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. If you’re unsure how to get started brushing your pet’s teeth at home, we’re here to help—ask us for a demo at your next visit!
